Bakery Blog & Recipes

Welcome to The OTHER Side of Mindful BakeHouse
The side for the do-it-yourselfers, the adventurous bakers, and those that live a little to far away to make it to our bakery in person. This is where I post all the fun gluten-free dairy-free things I've been testing/making that aren't official BakeHouse recipes. Most of which we also share on our YouTube Channel, as well as our second instagram account, & TikTok. So if you're like me and you'd rather watch than read, feel free to go follow us on your fav social media app in

Holiday Food Flares - Are you flaring now too?
I made a bad choice yesterday, and now I hurt. I woke up with that all too familiar feeling, like I’d “been hit by a truck”. My whole body hurts. I used to feel this way every morning before going grain, dairy & nightshade free. It’s so hard to will yourself up & out of bed. To get up & get going. I know I’ve “red-fooded” myself (when you eat a food on your Red Food/Do Not Eat list), and am now in a flare up. I have to push through and get up. For me, luckily, I know at least

Holiday Baking? Here's our favourite staple ingredients & where to get them.
High quality ingredients we love. If you're planning out some gluten-free baking over the holidays, but don't know where to find some of the ingredients, we're sharing all our favourite brands for paleo home baking. FLOURS: 1) Almond flour - Kirkland brand: here at the bakery, we love Costco almond flour. Every few months, I search for newer/better brands, but Costco always wins out. Note: almond meal is not the same as almond flour in a recipe. Almond meal included the skin

Pillowy Homemade Marshmallows
Have you ever made your own marshmallows at home? They're so pillowy and soft, you'll never want to go back to the store bought ones - And extra bonus, these marshmallows are made from cleaner ingredients, and will go amazing with your homemade paleo hot cocoa ( get the recipe here )!! We made these at our bakery for homemade s'mores. You'll need a thermometer for this recipe to make sure the syrup reaches the right temperature - but don't let that scare you off. If you don't

Work-Life Balance? Does it exist?
Our bakery has been a labour of love from the very start. It started more than a year ago as a "side-hustle" while James & I both still had full-time jobs. I started baking on my time off, and James joined in quite soon after, taking over the bagels & pretzel orders, while I baked all the sweets. We'd pack up our kiddos and take them across town to bake late into the evening (sometimes a little too late - sorry teachers!!). And we'd ask our big kids to babysit the little ones

My Cookies are Springbok-Puzzle-Famous!
You won't catch my cookies with sprinkles or brightly coloured icing anymore, but it gives you a glimpse into my family's hard-core holiday baking tradition. My family takes cookie baking pretty seriously. Every December, as far back as I remember, my mom would spend a whole Saturday at my aunt's house baking the most amazing cookies, that they'd pack into pretty cookie tins, and hand out to everyone at Christmas. When I got old enough, I got to join too! I started as the ch

Easy Fruit Jam
This is our easy berry jam that we use for our amazing pistachio thumbprint cookies. Only 3 ingredients, and so super easy, fresh & delicious! Tweak the syrup amount if you want it more or less sweet. When I make it for myself (to top my waffles - get my waffle recipe here ), I totally leave it out. What you need: I cup of berries (fresh or frozen) - for our thumbprint cookies, we use all raspberries. When I make it for waffles I love a combo of cherries and blueberries. But

Homemade Paleo Waffles (vegan option)
While my kids love pancakes ( you can try our pancake recipe here ), I've always been a sucker for French toast or waffles. So I adapted our easy gluten free, grain free, vegan pancake recipe to work in our waffle iron and make super tasty breakfast waffles. This one is a little trickier and has a few extra ingredients than the pancake recipe, but its totally worth it! You will need: 2 cup almond flour 2 tbsp coconut flour 1 tbsp cassava flour 1/4 cup tapioca flour 1 tbsp bak

Easy Vegan Pancakes
Use this recipe to make heart pancakes in this video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIrECcTgIg8&t=126s These have been my family's go to pancake recipe for over a year. My brother and his girls love it too! It's simple, and easy. It's gluten-free, grain-free and vegan. You will need: 2 cup almond flour 1/4 cup tapioca flour 1 tbsp baking powder (if you're sensitive to corn, make your own at home with 1 tsp baking soda, and 2 tsp of cream of tartar) 1 tbsp coconut sugar

Easy Homemade Coconut Whipped Cream
Here’s a delicious, yet simple plant-based recipe for whipped cream. Over here we add it to EVERYTHING from hot chocolates & lattes, to pies & ice cream, and pancakes & waffles . If you prefer it less sweet, you can leave out the syrup (or add a bit more, if you like it sweeter!). You will need: A 400mL can of full fat coconut milk or coconut cream (if you’re sensitive to soy, find a brand that does not have additives), chilled in fridge overnight. 2 tbsp pure maple syrup 1

Paleo Hot Chocolate Recipe
With the cold weather here, I find myself reaching for more warm beverages. There is something about wrapping my hands around a coffee mug, that I just find so soothing & grounding. Here at the bakery we had plans to make hot chocolate bombs this season, (and it isn't out of the question - we'll still try!!), but I thought I'd share a yummy paleo hot chocolate recipe to get you started this holiday season. What you need: 1 cup of milk (I like unsweetened almond milk, my kids

What is it like to be a Downtown Windsor Farmers' Market Vendor?
Short answer: Amazing & crazy! Long answer: It's a very early, very long day, exhausting & exhilarating... We started at the DWFM back in September 2020 (has it been more than a year!?!) Back then, I was still working full time as a Pharmaceutical Scientist at Catalent, so I signed up for alternating weekends, to give me time to bake enough product to bring. It meant lots of super late nights baking, labeling, packing and organizing. Waking up before the crack of dawn the mor

What's with this plate, you ask?
A few of you have asked about the striped plate we use in some of our photos. This awesome beachy plate in the photo below. (photo credit: 3 Girls and a Kiln) It starts back in Toronto, almost 15 years ago, when I was doing my post-grad in pharmaceutical R&D and met my best friend - she was in the class right after mine, and we ended up at a conference together and started a conversation over tattoos, lol. Fast forward a few years after we both finished our programs, and we

House of Sophrosyne Bake Sale
This Saturday, October 30, 2021 we will be participating in the county-wide bake sale fundraiser for the House of Sophrosyne!!! Stay tuned for their announcement this week, with a list of other participating bakeries across the county - but we're one of them! (so come see us Saturday if you need gf, dairy-free, or naturally sweetened goodies). Each bakery will be donating a portion of their sales that day. Instead of picking a special item, we've decided to donate $5 from EVE
